Applications

Friction stir welding behaves differently depending on what you are making. The joint geometry, the material, the thickness, the acceptance criteria and the volume all move the answer, and a process that is straightforward on a 3 mm butt weld in a cylindrical shell is a different engineering problem on a thin, long cold plate that has to stay flat to within a fraction of a millimetre.

These pages group the work by component family rather than by industry label, because the component is what determines whether the process is viable. Each covers the joint configurations that come up in practice, the fixturing and access constraints that decide feasibility, the failure modes the incumbent process tends to produce, and the inspection and validation route that gets a part accepted.

Cold plates and electronics cooling are published. EV heat exchangers, aerospace and space structures, cryogenics and MRI, nuclear and fusion materials, and copper for HV power are in preparation. If your component family is not yet covered, the underlying assessment is the same one we run in a feasibility trial — get in touch and we will tell you candidly whether the process suits your part.

Is this geometry a candidate? Reachability of the joint line is the gate that matters.
